Before you consider any of the rendering functionality, remember the render output will always be limited by the quality of the model, particularly consider edge fillets and assembly gaps.

3D rendering software creates an impression of your CAD model as if it existed in reality.  An image which gives an impression of surface textures, surface colours, shadows, reflections and highlights at a basic level and then more advanced environmental effects such as depth of field, light scatter, camera lens flare, fog effects.

Physical properties are created on the model and then an environment is created around the model. The environment is then reflected from or colour the model surfaces.

As you progress through the rendering process remember that many of the effects you create, such as surface appearances and lighting setups can generally be saved separately from the model and used with other models.  In this way you can start to build up your own library of render resources.
